Plan ahead and stay safe during any inclement or dangerous weather.
Helpful tips are provided below to help tenants prepare for and stay safe during severe weather conditions:
-
Locate Your Breaker Box
Know where your home's breaker box is in case of a power outage. To check current outages in your area, search “Power outage near me” or visit your local power company's website for updates. - Locate Water Shut Off Valves
Know where your home’s main water shut-off valve and any secondary valves (e.g., for sinks or toilets) are located. This can help prevent flooding or water damage if pipes burst or leaks occur during severe weather. -
Fuel Up and Charge Electronics
Ensure your vehicles have enough fuel and fully charge all essential electronics. Severe weather, such as hurricanes, ice storms, or floods, can disrupt fuel delivery and power availability. -
Assemble an Emergency Supplies Kit
Keep a disaster kit on hand with essentials such as:- Flashlights and batteries
-
Bottled water and non-perishable food
-
Blankets and warm clothing
-
Extra pet food and supplies
-
First aid kit
-
Any necessary medications
- Secure Outdoor Items
Bring in or secure outdoor furniture, plants, bikes, grills, and other items to reduce damage and prevent them from becoming dangerous projectiles in strong winds or flooding. - Review Your Renter’s Insurance
All Alcove tenants are required to maintain renter's insurance for the duration of their lease. Review your policy to understand coverage for weather-related damage. Requirements and more info can be found on our FAQ page here. - Avoid Floodwaters
Never drive through flooded roads. Water can be deeper than it appears, and moving water can sweep vehicles away. Remember: Turn around, don’t drown! - Document Any Damage
If your home sustains damage, take photos and/or videos immediately. Submit a support ticket through your Alcove portal here so the support team can review and share with your landlord. - Stay Informed
Monitor weather alerts via local news, weather apps, or emergency alert systems to stay updated on storms, flash floods, or other hazardous conditions. - Create a Communication Plan
Discuss with housemates how to stay in contact during severe weather. Decide on a safe meeting place and share emergency contact numbers. - Know Evacuation Routes
If your area is prone to flooding or severe storms, familiarize yourself with local evacuation routes and shelters. Plan ahead for how you would leave safely if needed.
